The Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs both enter their “Monday Night Football” matchup at M&T Bank Stadium with 2-0 records. Since the Ravens have looked dominant in both contests and the Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions, this is the biggest game of the year so far.
The two teams have played each other 10 times and met in the postseason only once. Here are the five best games in the series.
5. Kansas City Chiefs 27, Baltimore Ravens 24
Oct. 4, 2004 — Baltimore
The two teams were tied 17-17 at the half, but Kansas City took a 10-point fourth-quarter lead thanks to a Lawrence Tynes field goal and a touchdown by workhorse running back Priest Holmes, his second of the game. A one-yard rushing touchdown by Jamal Lewis cut Kansas City’s lead to the three, but the Chiefs did not let the Ravens past the 50-yard line for the final five minutes of the game.
4. Baltimore Ravens 9, Kansas City Chiefs 6
Oct. 7, 2012 — Kansas City, Mo.
The eventual Super Bowl champion Ravens forced four Chiefs turnovers and kicked three field goals to win this proverbial knife fight in a ditch. After the game, Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis said, “The ones that count the most are never the prettiest.”
3. Kansas City Chiefs 17, Baltimore Ravens 10
Sept. 28, 2003 — Baltimore
Jamal Lewis’ one-yard touchdown run tied the game at 10-10 with a little less than six minutes to play. On the ensuing kickoff, Dante Hall retook the lead for Kansas City with a 97-yard touchdown return (at 1:50 in the below compilation of every one his returns for a touchdown). Baltimore turned the ball over in two of its next three possessions, allowing the Chiefs to keep the lead and the win.
2. Kansas City Chiefs 33, Baltimore Ravens 28
Sept. 22, 2019 — Kansas City, Mo.
Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson collectively amassed nearly 700 yards of total offense, but the Chiefs led 30-13 going into the fourth quarter. Then the Ravens scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and Jackson’s nine-yard touchdown run pulled Baltimore within five points with two minutes to go. However, the two-point conversion failed, and Kansas City recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
